Reiki — A Practice Rooted in Love

Ginger Canning

At its heart, Reiki is a practice of love, presence, and connection.

I have always been drawn to the deeper gifts of the spiritual path — to healing, intuition, energy, and the quiet knowing that there is something within us that reaches beyond what we can see. Over time, I came to understand that what connects these different threads for me is love.

There is a passage in 1 Corinthians 13 that has stayed with me for many years. It speaks of spiritual gifts, knowledge, faith, and understanding, but reminds us that without love, these gifts lose their meaning. That teaching resonates deeply with how I have come to understand Reiki.

For me, Reiki is not about having power over another person, nor is it about believing that we are somehow responsible for “fixing” someone. It is about creating a space of compassion and presence in which healing, remembering, and reconnection can unfold.

Reiki, at its foundation, is love.

The Five Reiki Principles

The Five Reiki Principles offer a simple practice for bringing Reiki beyond a session and into the way we live our everyday lives.

Just for today:

  • I will not anger.
  • I will not worry.
  • I will be grateful.
  • I will do my work honestly.
  • I will be kind to every living thing.

I don’t see these principles as rules demanding perfection. I see them as invitations.

Just for today.

We return to them again and again — choosing presence instead of becoming lost in yesterday or tomorrow; gratitude instead of taking life for granted; integrity in how we move through the world; and kindness toward ourselves and others.

Perhaps that is one of Reiki’s greatest teachings: healing is not something that happens only when we place our hands upon ourselves or another person. Reiki becomes a way of being.

It asks us to become more conscious of how we live, how we love, how we respond, and how we meet one another.

And beneath all the symbols, techniques, teachings, and spiritual gifts, we return to something remarkably simple:

Love.
